about

Harmonizing with another person means getting involved with that person, work in unison, anticipating and reacting to the other's ideas.

When the German cellist and composer Cornelius Hummel and the Syrian-Palestinian pianist Aeham Ahmad are playing together, one is initially surprised at the music that is created. The pieces feel like a dialogue, charged with two completely different life stories, but sharing a fundamental tone. Together they overcome linguistic and cultural barriers in their music and show that we are all essentially made of the same tone.

Their music mixes an Arabic-inspired style with modern European classical music to create something new that is more than the sum of its parts. Out of pure pleasure in making music, the two of them, almost accidentally, bring something to life that Europe has been looking for and trying since the beginning of the flow of refugees - something new is created without having to give up the old.

The concert at the Rochuskapelle was touching, moving, rousing from the first note! The musicians “harmonized freely” and took turns engaging and the listeners and taking them - musically - into their arms. Aeham only had to raise his hand and the entire audience in the chapel sang along. Cornelius' short stories about getting to know each other and their first rehearsals, about the content of Arabic songs and the common musical path, gave a refreshingly close insight into the origin of the melodies and the work of two people who understand how to get involved with each other. Connecting Cultures and Connecting People indeed.
